Networking with other Centres across India

NNMF had designed a travel programme for the members of NNMF. Accordingly visits are arranged at various rehabilitation centers across India. Till date the centres which were visited includes SVNIRTAR at Olatpur, near Bhubaneshwar, Orissa, Ganga hospital, Coimbator, AIIPMR, at Mumbai and Latika Roy Foundation, at Dehradun.

The multidisciplinary team of NNMF, comprising of an orthopedic surgeon, architects, physiotherapist, clinical assistants, project co-ordinator and others, visited these various centers across India.

The purpose was to have an insight into the various beliefs and values that lead to decisions about childhood disability care.

The visits have been a real eye opener.

Networking with various people working for the cause of childhood disability has been an important gain of these visits.

We learned about different procedures and everyday tasks they do in a much simpler way using the resources they have.

Objective for these visits was to examine firsthand the impact of health policies and behaviours on health outcomes.

The expeditions gave an opportunity to examine the impact of health behaviours on health outcomes and ultimately, the local healthcare system. We had discussions with the administrators and staff working at these centers.

They have been thought provoking tours, broadening our perspective on health care.

Our visit to SVNIRTAR, at Olatpur, gave us insight about how a barrier free environment, for locomotor problems, can be created in a health set up. We received useful guidelines about how to provide better services, improve a team approach and develop efficient workforce.

Latika Roy foundation, at Dehradun, gave us useful inputs regarding inclusive education for children with special needs along with developing skills in these individuals, eventually facilitating their vocational rehabilitation.

The Sharp Memorial School for blind, also located in Dehradun, probably one of the first of its kind to be established in India, deeply inspired us to develop an atmosphere conducive for development of individuals with some kind of a physical deficit.

Our visit to ARUNIMA, a residential set up for individuals with Autism, located in the healing ambience of Dehradun, made us realize that it is possible to create a therapeutic community fostering independence, growth and learning.

Our visit to Ganga hospital, Coimbator, gave us an opportunity to observe how excellent administrative skills can contribute in better delivery of services to people with health problems.
